How to Find Work From Home Nursing Jobs

Some companies readily identify their home-based positions, for example, here is how easy it is to find eviCore’s remote jobs:

Work from home nursing jobs example

All companies don’t make it as easy as eviCore, though. In many cases you will need to search.

When you arrive on company career sites, look for an option that will retrieve only the work from home positions, such as above.  If there is no such option, try these terms to help you find them:

  • work from home
  • work at home
  • remote
  • virtual
  • telework
  • telehealth

This should help, but note that just because a position has one of these words in the title or description, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the position is a home job.

For example, if you find a position based on searching for “work from home”, when you click to read the full job description you may actually find that it says “this is not a work from home position”. The search will find “work from home” for you, but it may not always be what you expect.

Or you may find that searching for “virtual” gives you a result that means that you will monitor patients virtually, but you will still work on-site at your employer’s place of business.

Both of these scenarios are common, so read job descriptions carefully.

You could also try your searches with job descriptors, too, such as RN chart review, telephone triage, utilization management, clinical associate, RN case manager, etc.

I strongly suggest FlexJobs for even more hand-picked and screened companies. Whether you are interested only in work at home nursing jobs, or if you are open to another type of flexible arrangement, FlexJobs has you covered.

Companies that Hire LPNs to Work From Home

These companies are already on this list, but I get so many questions about which companies hire LPNs to work from home that I thought I would mention them separately:

  • Aetna
  • eQHealth
  • HealthHelp
  • Cigna
  • Envision Healthcare
  • Bayada Home Health Care
  • Hospital Corporation of America
  • Covance
  • Catasys
  • eviCore
  • LifePoint

This is not necessarily an exhaustive list of companies that hire work at home LPNs.  I’ve seen LPN job listings from these companies, but it does not indicate that the other companies listed here only hire RNs.

As always, companies’ hiring needs change, so unless they say directly that they only hire RNs for home-based work, review listings periodically for LPN jobs.

Registered Nurse Case Manager

I’ve noticed during research that though there are plenty of job titles for telecommuting nurses, one that I see very often is Case Manager.

Though certification may not always be a requirement for case management positions, I have definitely seen some organizations list it as a preferred qualification. Either way, a relevant credential can’t hurt :-).

I noticed a conversation between two readers in the comments section that may be helpful if you’re interested in becoming a certified nurse case manager.  Thank you to Betty Garner for sharing these resources!

Work Abroad as a Nurse

I get a lot of questions about resources for nurses who want to work abroad.  This is not a comprehensive list, but these resources are a good start.

Keep in mind that if you are interested in working as a nurse in another country, whether as a work from home nurse or on-site, you need to check with the appropriate licensing authorities for the best information.

I hope you find this guide to be helpful!

  • I am a Field Care Manager (contractor) as well as an LPN, Legal Asst. Ret. USN. I have been looking for a telecommute position. I am mostly finding RN’s no LPN’s. I have been a nurse for sixteen years and no longer able to work in a clinical setting. (knees). I have worked corporate for five years before I became a Field Care Manager. Do you have any idea where I could be directed to companies that will hire LPN’s at home? I reside in North Carolina but willing to relocate.

    • Some of the companies listed here hire LPNs, such as Aetna. You will need to check each company’s career site to see if LPN positions are available.

      • Rebecca, i’m in the same situation. I’m an LPN/ LVN II, currently in bridging program to get RN. I’ve been a nurse for 36 yrs, laid on from my prior company after 19 yrs (work at home) due to company changes. I’m looking for a challenging position but lately the job recruiters that I have looking for me have no clue about UR, UM, Case management. Also now, there is so much political governance that companies are only willing to accept RN’s for any position, despite LPN’s, LVN’s have a license and also take state boards. I have sent out over 80 plus resumes with barely a response from anyone.

  • Thanks for the information! In general is there a minimum amount of required experience for RNs? Also are there are many opportunities in Southern California?

    Thank you.

    • Hi Mike! Each company will have their own requirements based on the position. If you’re interested in phone triage, Fonemed and Citra may hire in California. I suggest reviewing each company to see if there are open positions in California.

  • Good blog you’ve got here.. It’s hard to find high-quality writing like yours nowadays.

I truly appreciate individuals like you! Take care!!

I have worked at a health clinic the last two years going on there third year. I previously worked at an urgent care for a year prior to that. I am very experienced with insurance as I have done many precerts. Help

    • Hi, Cassandra. Thanks for visiting! Take a look at each company career site to see if they hire LPNs. I’ve noted some of the companies that do, but it would be best to review each since criteria could have changed since the post was originally published.

    • There are quite a few companies that hire LPNs for utilization management work which includes prior authorizations. This is a good bet. I will say though that most remote jobs like these require that you are not your child’s primary cargiver during work hours.

  • Hi,
I am an RN with 9 years of pediatric experience. I am planning on moving overseas next year to South America. I am hoping to find a telecommuting job that will allow me to work from home from anywhere in the world. I can arrange to have a US based phone number from my computer, so I can receive and make calls locally.
Do you know of any companies that would hire me if I am not based in the US?

  • I’m looking for a part time, work from home position where I would be able to still take care of my 5 month old son. Do you know if there are any available?

      • Hi, Amanda. I’m not sure if any part-time positions are available, but each link leads to company career sites where you can find that information.

  • If anyone here has had any success in finding jobs working from home for a RN doing pre certs or clinical review or something with daytime hours could you please contact me. I currently live in TN and work for a medical call center doing triage from home. I love the job but wish I could find something with daytime hours. I look forward to hearing from other wonderful nurses who have been successful and has great opportunities. I am searching for this type work because I have a severe arthritis ankle and really don’t want to be crippled by working bedside 12 hours a day. rn2413@aol.com.

  • Hi, I am an RN from New Jersey with 7 years experience in mental health. I worked for a company called medassurant from home when I first graduated nursing school for about 20hrs a week, but after about a year they changed my assignment to the field. I completed chart reviews and extracted patient data. I had to leave the company unfortunately because I already worked full time and 20hrs of field work would not fit into my schedule a week. I would love to find another job from home. Does anyone know which companies have positions for mental health nurses from home? Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

I am a registered nurse in Western Canada, with eight years nursing experience. I also have my BScN. Just wondering if you know any work from home nurse employers in Canada?

    Thanks so much

    • Hi, Beth. If I come across employers that offer home-based nursing jobs in Canada, I’ll update the list. In the interim, some of the companies listed might hire in Canada.

      • Sykes also has frequent remote nurse positions. I have applied for one but they could not hire me since I live in Quebec. They hire in some but not all Canadian provinces. Good luck !

  • I work at at one of the larger insurance companies and I’ve been telecommuting for 7 years doing Utilization Review. Before that I worked 5 years telecommuting for another large insurance company. Generally the telecommute jobs require time in the office to train and show you are able to do the position, then you re released to work from home. The majority of the nurse jobs require you live in the state you hired in due to licensing (for example, if you work for the AHCCCS plan in AZ you must live in AZ and be licensed in AZ), although some positions are work in any state. It is rare to find a position that is work from home right from the start if you don’t already have experience to show you are able to stay focused and get your job done in a telecommute job. As I mentioned above, though, many positions will allow you to work from home once you have trained and are meeting the requirements of the job. Even if you have to find a position where you work in the office for a year or two,, once you have the experience in Utilization Review, Case Management, Disease Management, or Prior Auth, your next job is more likely to be a telecommute job. Good luck!

    • Carolyn, thanks so much for your feedback. The telephone triage jobs are home-based from day one, though Sirona does require a couple of weeks of training at their office. Those companies also accept nurses from several states (especially Fonemed). For nurses who are looking for positions such as yours (utilization, or case management, etc.), you give great advice about the potential of working on-site for a while prior to the job going 100% from home.

      • are any of these jobs available to LPN ?? I am currently in school for my RN but would be easier to do if I had more study time .. thanks

    • I work from home from the start by a company that is based out of Texas doing pre-cert and clinical review. I live in NC. My training was 2.5 weeks, very thorough, all online and through webinar, after training there is a 90 day probation period to ensure each nurse RN/LPN can meet their numbers, if not they will give you 1 on 1 training.

  • Hi,
I am a lactation Consultant and would like to find a job working from home in the Telecom field. Do you know of any companies that are hiring Lactation Consultants?

    • Hi, Lue. Great question! Some of the companies listed might hire work from home lactation consultants. I also found a company called UpSpring that has a team of home-based lactation consultants. They partner with Doctor on Demand to provide services. I’m not sure if they are hiring now, but you can contact them. Thanks for asking!

  • Hello!

I am looking for a job in the nursing field that I can do from home. I have been a nurse for 5 years and have worked in telemetry and medical/surgical. I live in the chicagoland area. any insight would be greatly appreciated!

    • If you are a Registered Nurse, you can find positions with any company on this list (there may be some location restrictions, though). Even if you’re not an RN, I suggest reviewing all companies, as some of them hire LPNs as well.

      • Can you email me the list? I am a 40 year experienced RN. I am looking for employment working from home. Multispecialty and Administrative qualifications.

        thank you

    • Hi, Nakia. I suggest looking for home jobs with the first 12 companies on this list; each link should take you directly to company career pages. I’ve indicated some of the companies that hire LPNs (like Aetna), and there may be LPN opportunities with the other companies as well.

  • Hello
I work in GI now and do the sedation and recovery aspects of the job. Before this I did PACU and peri-op. I would love to work from home now, but when I look for jobs I can’t seem to find anything that includes wisconsin. I find this strange, as Wisconsin is part of the reciprocity pact and includes about 20 states I believe. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have also looked at some of the sites that give companies, but does anyone know how to find a recruiter for this?

    • Hi, Tasha. If you’re interested in trying telephone triage, Fonemed hires in Wisconsin (they are one of the companies listed here). Otherwise, you might want to create job alerts on company websites; when there are openings that match your criteria, you will be emailed. If you haven’t already, visit some nursing forums to see if you can get additional insights about the type of home job you’d like.

  • Hi , really looking for nursing work that can be done from home. Based in Kildare Ireland any suggestions on how to access such work and does it even exist here.

  • I have 1.5 years RN experience and would love to work from home, I live in Ohio. I am currently in school for my BSN. I haven’t really seen anything, any thoughts?

    • It seems that nurses in compact states may have an easier time finding home-based opportunities. It doesn’t mean that there’s nothing out there, though! Forums like All Nurses and Mighty Nurse might have additional resources that can help you find a home job in your state. Good luck!

  • Hello, I am a RN with 4 plus years of trauma nursing and triage experience, and am wanting to work from home as a phone triage nurse. I live in New Mexico and havent seen much for this state. Any help would be wonderful! Thank you.

  • Hi I’m trying to find work that is completely remote that I could do online while I’m out of the country. I’m an RN with many years experience. Most of the jobs I saw listed still required me to come in at times. Can I work any of these jobs completely remote?
    Thanks

    • Hi, Dana. I’ve seen positions that are completely remote, but I doubt you will be able to work with any of these companies in a remote nursing job while you’re out of the country. Take a look at Indeed.com and this page at QuintCareers, and hopefully you’ll find possibilities in the country you’ll be visiting.

  • This was very informative and helped to eliminate a lot time expenditure that would have been spent trying to guess what words to use and the actual searching. Yet, from what all I have found, I haven’t found any if these kinds of positions being available or offered for nurses in West Virginia, which is where I live. I am a Registered Nurse and very interested in finding some positions like these in my area. Any help or guidance would be great and appreciated.

    • Hi Sheri. In some cases, companies may reserve many of their work from home nursing jobs for nurses who live in compact states. If you haven’t already, try the major insurance companies. They tend to have more job openings in various locations. You may have to search periodically before something comes available.

  • My aunt used to work as a telephonic RN for Alere and she LOVED it. She loved calling people for their health check-ins. This was 5+ years ago now, but I believe she worked with COPD and diabetic patients, and they were all really sweet and looked forward to their nursing call from her. 🙂 Thanks for sharing, this is an awesome list!
